Academic Authors’ Boot Camp

for Early Career Faculty

March 2023

Presented by:  Dr Dan Remenyi

Having work published in a reputable academic journal has become a key to most university positions and promotions. A list of published papers/articles has come to largely define the capability of a university teacher or researcher.

The problem which early careers academics face is that normally little if any help and advice is provided to those wanting to start their publishing career and thus the task of getting published can seem enormous.

Writing academic papers is a craft skill and it is not easy to understand how it is done unless one is fully involved in the actual process itself. For this reason, an Academic Authors’ Boot Camp has been devised. The Boot Camp consists of four 2-hour weekly webinars and between each session participants will be encouraged to work on a paper.

Feedback on any work submitted will be provided to the participants before each webinar.

In becoming a published academic there are four main sets of issues which have to be addressed. And these are:

Publishing opportunities available to the academic researcher.

This section addresses different types of research and will highlight the routes which are most likely to bring results to early career academics.

The skill of writing academic English.

Here guidelines are introduced which inform participants about the task of writing in the required way and to the required standard to be acceptable to academic journals.

An understanding of the academic publishing world.

The world of academic publishing is complex, and it is important for academics to know their way around it.

Dealing with an academic journal.
Research has to be matched to an appropriate journal. The Guide to Authors has to be followed, Revisions are often required, etc.

During the 4 weeks participants may be in contact with the facilitator on issues arising out of the development of their own paper. It is important to note that this Boot Camp is much more than an academic writing course as the skill of writing is only part of what is needed to become a published academic.

The Boot Camp will be conducted through Zoom sessions which will normally be of a 2-hour duration during which group participation will be required.
