A personal message from the Conference Chair

ICIE 2018 will be co-hosted by three universities in the heart of Washington DC – Georgetown University, George Washington University and the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).  The urban campus of UDC is the physical location for the conference.  The setting for ICIE 2018 reflects the focus of the conference – leveraging innovation and entrepreneurship to bridge gaps in perspectives, across economic sectors and income brackets, age groups and ethnic perspectives.   Washington DC is the home to hundreds of maker spaces, to community-based innovation, to entrepreneurial grass root for- and not-for-profit businesses focused on the environment, health, education, energy and transportation.  The universities in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area routinely engage in community-based and community-focused participatory research.   Washington DC has all of the amenities of a large metropolitan area with its 20 colleges and universities, its many public museums, monuments and historical sites, the presence of international organizations and NGO’s but its neighborhoods feel like small towns.  It is a good blend of urban and rural with historic farms and open countryside less than 10 miles outside of its formal boundaries.  It is one of the fastest growing urban centers with a rapidly expanding younger population.   As the nation’s capital it brings together people from diverse regions of the country with differing perspectives.  All of this creates an environment rich in knowledge exchange, with opportunities to learn and to expand individual perspectives.
