A personal message from the Conference Chair

It is 20 years since intellectual capital (IC) was deemed so important to warrant the first ever international conference in Amsterdam, sponsored by the European Union. Now, while IC is known to scholars and practitioners, it is suffering an identity crisis with terms such as intellectual assets, knowledge capital, non-financial information, and intangibles. As a result, this conference has added the term “intangibles” into the title. However, this alone doesn’t help clear the identity crisis because many scholars and practitioners are unsure of how to leverage IC and intangibles to create economic, utility, social and environmental value, and are even unsure of what factors constitute value.

At ECIIC 2019 we will enjoy Keynote Presentations from Dr. John Dumay, Macquarie University, Australia and Prof Martin Piber, University of Innsbruck, Austria. We will also be holding a Roundtable Discussion on “Doing Research on Intangibles and Intellectual Capital: New Frontiers, Challenges and Future Scenarios” The Panellists for this include Prof Rosa Lombardi, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Prof Stefano Marasca, University Politecnica delle Marche and Prof Stefano Zambon, Ferrara University, Italy.

At ECIIC we hope that both supporters and detractors of the IC debate will present their research, theories and ideas that enable a broad discussion on how we can better understand and use intangibles to solve organisational wealth and utility creation problems, while not forgetting how organisations impact on our wider society and help create social and environmental value. On behalf of the Organising Committee we welcome you to Pescara to help resolve the IC and intangibles identity crisis and contribute to the ongoing IC and intangibles discourse.
