Welcome to ICEL 2018

The International Conference on e-Learning was established 13 years ago. It has been held in Malaysia, Chile, Hong Kong, The Bahamas, South Africa, to mention only a few of the countries who have hosted it. ICEL is generally attended by participants from more than 25 countries and attracts an interesting combination of academic scholars, practitioners and individuals who are engaged in various aspects of e-Learning. Among other journals, the Electronic Journal of e-Learning (indexed by Scopus) publishes a special edition of the best papers presented at this conference.

ICEL 2018 is being held at the The Cape Peninsula University of Technology and the Conference Chair is Eunice Ivala

A personal message from the Conference Chair

On behalf of the organizing team, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. CPUT is the largest University in the Western Cape Province of South Africa by student enrolment. This province, at the Southern tip of Africa is a very interesting place! Measuring roughly 50,000 square miles, the province is roughly the size of England or the State of Louisiana.  And it is famed for attractions like the Table Mountain, one of the Seven New Wonders of the World (visible from the Conference venue);  Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned (also visible from the Conference venue); great winelands adorning rolling hills (hopefully you will get a chance to enjoy the world-famous Cape wine); the confluence of two oceans and two very different Ocean currents (the powerful and warm Aghulas current on the Indian Ocean side of the country and the cold Benguela current on the Atlantic side- meeting violently at the southern edge of the Western Cape); the unique Cape Floristic Kingdom (the smallest of the 6 recognized Floral Kingdoms and home to 9,000 species of plants), and so on…

The diversity of peoples in the Western Cape is accompanied by a wide variety of social contexts and this leads to varying needs of students entering Higher Education. As a result, e-Learning offers a powerful means of addressing these diverse needs, providing access to Higher Education; student engagement; epistemological access; flexible learning and curriculum etc.

We appreciate that the challenges are not unique to students in the Western Cape or even in South Africa, and due to the global nature of this conference,  participants from around the world will be able to share and gain insights into ways of addressing similar challenges in their environments and contexts. This year the core theme of the conference is Blended learning and learning analytics, and we especially look forward to learning from each other how learning analytics and blended learning are applied in different environments. This promises to be a great conference, as is the custom with our ICEL family.

We are waiting to welcome you to South Africa, to Cape Town, and to CPUT!
