Critical Thinking and how it works

60-minute online session
Led by Professor Dan Remenyi

Thursday 19 November, 14:00-15:00

Critical thinking (CT) impacts research and teaching through its role in pedagogy, its importance in employment and its impact upon organisational reality.
Higher education is continually called upon to foster CT as a core graduate capability, with employers citing a critical skills gap among new entrants to the workforce. However, the term CT encompasses a wide spectrum of concepts, ranging from encouraging impromptu questioning to conducting deep, disruptive evaluations of complex organisational policies and structures.
The capacity for CT depends as much on a psychological disposition and intellectual habits than on skill. While basic analytical skills can be taught, applying them appropriately requires a specific mindset.

90-minute K-Café panel discussion
Led by David Gurteen

The higher education landscape is evolving rapidly, reshaping what it means to build a successful university career. This 90-minute K-Café panel discussion explores “The Academic Career Now and in the Future,” offering a look at how scholars can cope in an increasingly complex environment. It will examine the enduring academic triad of Research and Publication, Teaching and Pedagogy, and Administration and Service, considering how its demands shift with emerging technologies, funding, and changing institutional priorities.
After 3 short 5-minute presentations there will be small group discussions providing an opportunity for some practical insights on balancing these core responsibilities, maximizing academic impact, and proactively steering your career trajectory forward.
