I was
delighted to have the opportunity of Chairing the ECMLG event at the University of Winchester this year. This was the
third European Conference on Management, Leadership and Governance.
Our University is well acquainted with international visitors, with students
from some 53 different countries studying here. We were therefore delighted
to welcome participants from Europe, Middle East,
South Africa and the USA
to join the British contingent.
Although we formally began the conference on Thursday morning, a number of
people met on Wednesday evening for a welcome drink at the Winchester Hotel –
this was a great opportunity for old friends to meet up and for new
acquaintances to be made.
The conference opened with an interesting talk from Malcolm Berry from the University of Reading on the topic of Management,
Leadership and Governance in a Sustainable World.
This was followed by research paper presentations in two streams, which this
year represented the diversity of research that the subject brings to the
academic debate. There was a healthy mix of empirical and theoretical papers
and topics ranged from the technical to the strategic.
On Thursday afternoon Nigel Laurie led a Socratic dialogue on What is Good
Management and those who participated certainly enjoyed a stimulating
interactive session – conversation continued well into the evening.
A great feature of this conference is making time for participants to talk
with each other and to understand what other research is being conducted
around the world. This was certainly achieved on Thursday evening with a most
enjoyable conference dinner arranged at the Winchester Guild Hall. I think I
can speak for everyone that friends were made and for some, new ideas for
future liaisons formulated. The photos posted on the photo gallery speak a
thousand words.
After some further research presentations on Friday morning, Malcolm Berry
was joined by Scott Lichtenstein from Henley
Management College,
Luis Perera from PricewaterhouseCoopers in Santiago
and Rodney Clare from EDS in the UK for a lively panel discussion
on Leadership issues.
I believe that it was a great event, and much was gained by all who
attended. I would like to thank
everyone who contributed this year to the conference, and I am looking
forward to the 4th European Conference in 2008.
