University information

The University of Vila Nova de Famalicão is located in the centre of the city of Famalicão. The Town Hall, the City Commercial Centre and the City Cathedral are all located less than 5 minutes away, walking. The city’s Cultural Centre, namely Casa das Artes and Fundação Cupertino de Miranda and Bibilioteca Camilo Castelo Branco are also within easy walking distance from the University.

Every year the University hosts a series of cultural and scientific events, on the fields of Architecture, Economics, Engineering and also of more global nature.

In the academic year of 2007/8 the events that were held include the following:

-          A series of regular meetings and workshops organized by the Faculty of Architecture.

-          Three Conferences on Accountability and Marketing, organized by the Faculty of Economics.

-          Three events on Lean Thinking organized by the Engineering Faculty;

-          An event on the relation between the media and the University, with the participation of well known journalists and politicians. 

Conference accommodation

Conference accommodation was offered at 2 different hotels. Accommodation at the Hotel Moutados is now sold out – details can be found at the hotel website.

The Hotel Cidnay located in nearby Santo Tirso is rated as 4 stars and is now sold out. Transportation will be supplied between the Hotel Cidnay and the university.

Getting from Lisbon to Santo Tirso there are two possibilities:
a) Lisbon Porto Campanha in a nacional train (Alfa 30 Euros or Intercidades 20 euros ) and then Porto Campanha Santo Tirso (2 euros) in a local train.

b) Lisbon Famalicao in a direct national train (Alfa 30 Euros) and then Famalicao Santo Tirso by taxi (10 euros).

General information about Vila Nova de Famalicão

Vila Nova de Famalicão provides the perfect base from which to see the best of the lush, green Minho region. As short drive to the east brings you to Guimarães, an ancient town reputed to be the birth of the nation. A similar distance north lies Braga, famous for its numerous churches and important pilgraimge shrine. 20 km west are the coastal towns of Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde, both with long sandy beaches and excellent fish restaurants.

Getting to Vila Nova de Famalicão

By Commercial Airlines.
The national airlines are TAP Air Portugal and Portugalia.

There are two main options for flying to Portugal en route to the city of Famalicão.

Landing at the Lisboa International Airport located in the capital city of Lisbon.

Landing at the Porto International Airport located in the northern coastal city of Porto.

From Lisbon Airport:

Take the taxi to Oriente Station in Lisbon:
Price: 7 Euros with luggage.
Duration: 10 minutes. (Be careful with the taxi drivers at the airport asking you for much more money.)

Take the Alfa Pendular directly to Famalicão (29 Euros) or to Porto Campanhã (27.5 Euros). To Famalicão 4 times a day, to Porto almost every hour.

Take the Train in Campanhã to Famalicão: trains every hour, and in peak hours every half an hour.

Cost: 1.6 euros.
Duration: 45 minutes.

From Porto Airport:

Take the Metro to Campanhã Station: trains every 5 minutes. Cost: 2 Euros.

Duration: 20 minutes.

Take the Train in Campanhã to Famalicão: trains every hour, and in peak hours every 30 minutes. Cost: 1.6 euros. Duration: 45 minutes.

By Coach
Services are run in express or ordinary coaches, linking the country's main cities and towns all over.

By Car

Car hire companies can be found in all major towns, and at the international airports. You must show proof of identity (Identity Card for EC citizens and passport for other nationals) and a valid driving license. A green card is essential and it's wise to take out insurance coverage and collision insurance. Cars can not be hired out to anyone under 21. Televan will give you an idea of the local rates..

Climate in conference month

Famalicão is located in northern Portugal. It is the centre of a multi city region including, Porto, Braga, Guimarães, Barcelos, Vila do Conde, and Santo Tirso. All those cities are reachable by train, by bus and by taxi.
