University information

Though the university's year of foundation is generally given as 1222, that in fact only marks the date from which there are records of a “fixed and publicly recognised university established within the city” and so the actual foundation can be dated even early, to a period when a number of professors and students had left the University of Bologna as a result of “offences to academic freedom and the failure to observe the privileges that had been guaranteed to teachers and pupils”.

In recent years, the University has been able to meet the problems posed by overcrowded facilities by re-deploying over the Veneto as a whole. In 1990, the Institute of Management Engineering was set up in Vicenza. The student body today numbers in excess of 65,000 students

We like to think of ourselves as a friendly, open and supportive institution in the heart of a great city and we look forward to welcoming a record number of participants to ECKM 2009.

General information about Vicenza

The town of Vicenza has remote origins, that go back to the prehistoric age. In the medieval area Vicenza was under the domination of the Scaligery dynasty, but from 1404 to 1797 the long Venetian domination guaranteed four centuries of peace and well-being. The art reached very high levels and the economy grew. The 16th century was the time of the great architect Andrea Palladio, who left Vicenza and the whole world a priceless artistic heritage. In the 19th century, after the fall of Napoleon, the town passed to the Austrians and later belonged to the Lombard Venetian Kingdom. In 1866 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy.

Vicenza is a land of ancient and noble traditions, a city and a province in which you can feel the history of past centuries and the heritage of the ages, which have left an indelible mark. From the 8th September Patron Saint's day celebration, dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Monte Berico, to the dozens of typical fairs and exhibitions dotted all over the province such as the Chess Game in Marostica or the magical sight of Romeo and Juliet's castles ain Montecchio Maggiore. Whether it concerns promoting the typical products of its wines and the local gastronomy, or of highlighting its traditional cultural characteristics, the city and province of Vicenza have always got an interesting proposal to offer.
