Southampton Solent University is the latest name for a highly vocational
higher education institution that can trace its history back over 150 years
as a focus for education in the South of England. Situated in the centre of
the bustling city of Southampton,
adjacent to green parkland and the full range of urban entertainments, the
University is dedicated to providing its students with the best range of
practical scholarship available anywhere. We take pride in our friendly
environment, where our academic stars work closely with the students to
develop their skills and learning.
Our 16,000 students study for a wide range of undergraduate degrees, spanning
the alphabet from Art, Business, and Computing to Tourism, Yacht Design and
Watersports. We also offer many master's degrees and PhDs, plus a variety of
professional and short course training. We are located in a major city south
of London, the region with the most developed
knowledge economy in the UK
and the county – Hampshire - with the third highest density of
knowledge businesses. So it’s not surprising that Southampton’s
two universities play a major role in sustaining and developing this
continuing success. As the home of the Ordnance Survey, IBM Hursley Park
Research Centre and Roke Manor Research, the city and its surroundings have
every reason to welcome the growth of knowledge industry.
Facing the Solent and Isle of Wight, based around the estuaries of the famed
rivers Test and Itchen, Southampton has a
rich maritime history and was the departure point for the Mayflower and
(somewhat less auspiciously) the Titanic. The Solent provides some of the
finest yachting and sailing water in the world, as evidenced by the vast
numbers using it every day, and Southampton is the leading UK centre for cruise liners. The
New Forest begins just outside the city, with its superb cycle paths, wild
horses and the justly famed Beaulieu
National Motor
Museum.
We have every confidence of providing an exciting, worthwhile and
intellectually stimulating conference, based in our newly refurbished
conference centre. Equally, we have no doubt you will find Southampton, the Solent, and the broader countryside both interesting
and captivating.
Come and join us at ECKM 2008, in Southampton!
