University information

One of the UK largest universities, the University of Plymouth provides an ideal environment for learning and professional development. The University has four campuses, the largest, overlooking Plymouth city centre, houses the University’s faculties of Technology, Science including the Institute of Marine Studies, Human Sciences and the Plymouth Business School.

Conference accommodation

Accommodation for this conference is available on the University Campus. The rooms have been recently renovated and offer modern en-suite facilities.


An
internet connection service is available in the rooms for a charge of £10. Guests need an Ethernet cable to connect.

General information

Plymouth is a city in the southwest of England. Sir Francis Drake, the Pilgrim Fathers, Darwin, Cook, Sir Francis Chichester and many more have set sail from her harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Sited at the outlest of the Tamar and Plym rivers, The city is casily accessible by sea, air and land.

Getting to the conference

Air

Plymouth City Airport

Plymouth City Airport is about four miles (approx. 6.5km) to the North of the city centre on the A386. Details about transfers from the airport are available in the Plymouth Airport Guide or by phone on +44 (0)870 241 6830.

Gatwick Airport
If you arrive at London Gatwick, you can take an AirSouthWest flight to Plymouth City Airport. You can also travel by train (or coach) from Gatwick to Plymouth.

Heathrow Airport
If you arrive at London Heathrow, you can travel by train (or coach) to Plymouth. There are two ways of travelling by train: first you take the Rail-Air link bus to Reading Rail station and then get a train from there; alternatively, you take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington station and get a train from there. It is worth noting that trains leaving London or Reading at peak times can be very expensive. If you can get a Saver or SuperSaver ticket, it will be cheaper.

By Train
Coach & Train
Plymouth Railway Station and Coach Station is a few minutes walk from the City Centre and Conference Venue as indicated on the map above.
If you are travelling by coach or train then the following web sites may be useful - National Express, TheTrainLine.
It is strongly recommended that users confirm train times and services with the rail enquiries phone line. Tel +44 (0) 8457 48 49 50.

Getting from London Paddington and London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Plymouth by train:
From LHR either take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington and then take a train to Plymouth, or take the RailAir link bus to Reading railway station and then a train to Plymouth. The former option is the more expensive. Try not to pay full fare; e.g. try to buy a Saver or a SuperSaver ticket. Note that with a Saver ticket on weekdays you cannot leave London Paddington before 0926 or between 1631 and 1821, and with a SuperSaver (less expensive than a Saver) you cannot leave London Paddington before 0926 or between 1558 and 1906. Similarly, with a Saver ticket on weedays you cannot leave Reading before 0950 or between 1658 and 1846, and with a SuperSaver you cannot leave Reading before 0950 or betwen 1620 and 1932. SuperSavers are not valid on Fridays.

By Car
Plymouth is linked to the UK motorway network via the A38 Devon Expressway. You can find car routes via the linked CAR above.

Ferry
Brittany Ferries operate services between, Roscoff/Cherbourg (France)and Plymouth as well as Santander (Spain) and Plymouth.
