| General information | Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and is located on the west coast on both sides of the river Göta Älv - at the bay Kattegatt. Founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf, Gothenburg now has close to 900 000 inhabitants in the so called Large-Gothenburg (incl some small areas outside the centre). Swedish is the national language and the currency is the Swedish Krona (SEK). For centuries, the city was strategically important as the gateway to the west and many inhabitants owe their ancestry to Dutch and Scottish nationals. It’s harbour became the main harbour for trade and, during years of population emigration to America, the main embarkation port, echoed in the settlement of Gothenburg in Nebraska. Now banking, finance, industry and tourism are the pillars of Gothenburg’s economy. In addition to it’s academic and business life, Gothenburg has a strong musical life, both historically and current. Whilst not everyone will appreciate the famous “death metal” style, Indie and Classical music are also well represented. Sports too is high on the agenda, with Gothenburg hosting world championships in handball, athletics, swimming, ice hockey and figure skating. As a seaport, sailing is very popular and there are around 20,000 sailboats and yachts in the area.
