| University information | The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was founded in 1837. At first all four Faculties were housed in the residence of Architect Statis Kleanthes, but by 1841 classes were held in a new building. In 1904 the Arts Faculty split into Arts and Sciences, the latter with Physics, and Maths departments and a School of Pharmacy. In 1919, a Chemistry department was added and in 1922 the old School of Pharmacy was redesignated a department, and the School of Dentistry was created. A new era began in the academic year 1927-8 with the addition of entrance examinations for all faculties. By this stage, an average 2 thousand new students a year were matriculating. Since 1954, the Ministry of Education and Religion has been responsible for fixing the number of admissions. In the 1960’s the University gained a new campus in Ilissia, which now houses the Schools of Philosophy, Theology and Sciences. Today, the University is the second largest in Greece, with more than fifty thousand undergraduate students. Five Schools, with twenty-six Faculties and further five independent faculties ensure a full range of topics to study except engineering. Link: http://www.uoa.gr/uoauk/uoaindex.htm |

| General information | Athens, capital city of Greece, is well known throughout the world as one of the oldest cities, a centre for philosophy, learning and the arts for at least 3000 years. Ancient monuments, such as the Parthenon, atop the Acropolis, dominate a more modern landscape, formed by the merging of many former towns and villages that now form the modern city. In September, the archeological area of Athens accommodates plenty of tourists worldwide as well as some live outdoor performances at the Romaic “Herodes Atticus Odeon” (announced yearly on the Athens’ Festival website ). The recently founded “Acropolis Museum” is also well worth visiting. Known as the “birthplace of Democracy”, Athens is a vibrant city, with much to see and do. Although much of the city is pedestrianised, there are excellent transport links, both internal and to the wider world. Surrounded by mountains, Athenians consider theirs one of the best climates in Europe, with mild autumn and winter seasons.
