General information
|
Haarlem is the capital city of the province of North Holland.
The historical centre of the tulip-bulb growing district of Holland, the city
is nicknamed “Bloemenstad”, the flower city. Haarlem dates back to the 10th
century. By the 12th century, it was the residence of the Counts
of Holland. Haarlem
has been destroyed by fire several times in its history, each time being
rebuilt by wealthy citizens.
Historically tulips, textiles and beer have been the staples of Haarlem’s
economy, but the city has strong artistic links too with painters, architects
and Laurens Janszoon Coster, who for many years was regarded as the inventor
of the printing press, before Gutenberg was more widely acknowledged. Corrie
ten Boom and Hannie Schaft are noted citizens of Haarlem in more recent history.
With historical buildings, modern coffee shops, museums and close proximity
to beaches, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Haarlem. See the links in the other useful
links sections for more information.
