| University information | The University of Brighton is a community of over 21,000 students and 2,100 staff based on five campuses in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings and we can trace our origins back 150 years in Brighton where we began teaching artisan skills in the kitchens of the Royal Pavilion. The number of academic awards made each year - at levels ranging from pre-degree through to professional programmes and doctorates has doubled since university designation in 1992. There are six faculties and eighteen schools within the university delivering an enviable academic portfolio of over 500 undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree programmes. The most recent Research Assessment Exercise which assesses the quality of research of universities and colleges in the UK, published in December 2008 found that nearly 80% of our research has been judged to be of international standing and of all submissions made over 60% contain research that is world-leading. Also, the University of Brighton is ranked 1st in the post-92 sector in terms of quality (Research Fortnight) and The Times Higher Education has named Brighton as one of just two rising research stars with our position in their league tables having jumped 21 places.
