University information

"In terms of title we may be one of the newest universities, but in terms of character and culture we are one of the oldest."

By the standards of today’s universities, the University of Winchester is small, with some 3000 full-time and 2500 part-time students. Most are following undergraduate courses, though they have a significant and growing number of students on Masters and Doctoral level courses. The culture of the University is informal and the emphasis is on providing a supportive community within which individuals can develop themselves and find a clear sense of direction. They aim to produce graduates who will make a difference in and through their chosen careers.

By the standards of most universities they are also very old – established in 1840 and on the same ‘King Alfred’ campus in Winchester since 1862. This history fosters a strong sense of identity and continuity which bridges changes of name – they changed from King Alfred’s College to University College Winchester in 2004 and adopted the title ‘University of Winchester’ in June 2005.

The original Anglican foundation established a strong commitment to public service and the public good which still persists today. Teaching is their main focus, and their graduates are their main contribution to society.

The international airport of Southampton is less than 10 miles from Winchester and can be reached in 15 minutes by road or rail. The University is also well placed for the international airports of Heathrow and Gatwick.

By car
Visitors travelling from the north, south or east of Winchester should approach the University from junction 11 of the M3 and proceed along the B3335 following signs for Winchester. Pass through St Cross, crossing over traffic lights. After passing the BP petrol station take the first left (Ranelagh Road). Pass under the railway bridge into Airlie Road and take right fork into Sparkford Road. The University is on the left hand side halfway up the hill of Sparkford Road.

Visitors travelling from a westerly direction should approach Winchester along the Romsey Road. After passing the Royal Hampshire County Hospital turn right into St James’ Lane. After a sharp corner turn right into Sparkford Road. The University is halfway down the hill on the right hand side.

By train
Winchester is less than one hour by train from London (Waterloo). Direct services also link Winchester with many major towns and cities including Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, York, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The University of Winchester is less than one mile (approx 10 minutes walk) from the railway station. Leave the station by the main exit and turn right into Station Road leading into Upper High Street. Turn right over the bridge and left into Clifton Terrace. Cross Romsey Road and walk along St James’ Terrace. Then follow the path through West Hill Cemetery. The University is situated opposite the far gate of the cemetery.

Bus and Coach
Main bus and coach routes stop at King Alfred’s Statue in central Winchester. The walk to College takes approximately 15 minutes. On alighting proceed along Broadway and through the pedestrianised High Street. Turn left into Southgate Street. Cross St Clements Street and take the next right into St James’ Lane. Proceed up the hill and just after the railway bridge take the footpath through West Hill Cemetery. The College is situated opposite the far gate of the cemetery.
