University information
|
Of the
thirteen universities in the Netherlands, Utrecht University
is one of the oldest. Its origin is connected with the city of Utrecht
and goes back to the middle ages.
The Formal founding of a university in the modern sense was delayed for various
political reasons. The city of Utrecht
officially proclaimed a University in 1636. The official university began
with seven professors in four departments: law, medicine, philosophy and
theology.
After 1900 the university experienced a strong growth in its number of
students. At its 300th anniversary in 1936 the university had almost 2700
students and nearly 70 professors. By 2000 the number of students had grown
to 22,000 and faculty members numbered well over 3,000.
Over the years, the university has divided its activities over two locations.
The city centre still harbours the university
museum, as well as the law, economics and arts departments. The international
and cultural organizations of the university are also concentrated there. The
other departments and the new library are located at the Uithof
on the East side of Utrecht,
near the Academic Hospital.
The Utrecht School of Economics (the conference venue) is located in the city
centre, about 5 minutes walk from the central station and city centre of Utrecht. The historic
center with its canals and wharves is a favorite place to relax for many
students; whether they prefer going to a museum or lounging on one of the
many terraces.
