The three
campuses of the University
of Antwerp, the venue of this year's
conference, are
situated in the historic city centre and in the green belt to the south of
the city of Antwerp.
The University of Antwerp has approximately 10.000
students. Over 1.000 of these students - exchange students not included - are from foreign countries, with a majority of EU
countries.
University Facilities
Apart from the usual modern infrastructure, UA has a University hospital
(UZA) with 612 beds (campus Wilrijk), libraries on
all three campuses, computer labs, sports centres,
restaurants and cafeterias, several students' associations and ESN and
KARIBU, both clubs for exchange and foreign students.
About the City of Antwerp Antwerp is a
pleasant city, full of charm and modern convenience. The city boasts many excellent
museums and historical monuments, as well as a fast-paced nightlife, fine
shopping districts, and a booming commercial centre.
Antwerp is the home of outstanding Art
Museums, which offer a comprehensive survey of masterpieces, from the Old Flemish
Masters to the contemporary avant-garde. Rubens home also maintains a superb
permanent collection. In addition to these indoor galleries, Antwerp itself is a museum of sculpture and
architecture. From the eleventh century Castle on the river to the Gothic
Cathedral and the RenaissanceTown Hall, the visiting
student is surrounded by magnificent buildings and monuments. The city was
the 1988 laureate of the 'Europa Nostra Awards' for
the protection of Europe's architectural
heritage. It was elected the 1993 Cultural Capital of Europe.
As a
working city Antwerp
ranks high because of its port and its petrochemical industry. Due to the
European Union developments, it has become the hub of major economic
activities: the city is experiencing a financial boom, attracting many multinationals and international know-how.
Appropriately enough, the gem of the city's second largest industry is
diamonds. The volume of the Antwerp
diamond trade is by far the largest in the world.
