THE KNOWLEDGE-CAFE BRIEFING
If only we knew what we know

Initially thought by many to be another short-lived management fad, the  current interest in Knowledge Management has now been on the corporate agenda for over a decade.

It is increasingly understood that those who can mobilise and focus their corporate knowledge have a distinct competitive advantage. Despite the acceptance of this idea the amount that has been achieved by Knowledge Management is highly variable as it is now clear that implementing Knowledge Management is not a trivial matter. Time and again we hear that Knowledge is still stuck in well protected corporate silos and sometime corporate executive are heard saying, If only we knew what we know!

Today most people recognise that Knowledge Sharing is a key issue for Knowledge Management and thus for organisational success. But real Knowledge Sharing requires a very open mindset and it continues to be a challenge for many organisations. In fact it can be very difficult to even get people to just talk openly to one another other about their specific corporate interests, opportunities and responsibilities.

Also although the creation of Communities of Practice has been a great idea, it has not been all that easy to get people together with the right outlook to allow this to function effectively. What has really been lacking is a technique to kick-start Communities of Practice as well as a way of helping them continue and evolve.

One way of energising an organisation to achieve real Knowledge Sharing benefits is to use a Knowledge-Café. A Knowledge-Café is an effective vehicle for opening up conversations and discussions which will lead to knowledge sharing.

Specifically a Knowledge-Café used properly can:-

1. Focus your organisation’s Knowledge
2. Strengthen your organisation’s Knowledge Network
3. Get a Community of Practise really going
4. Make Knowledge Sharing a reality for your organisation

In effect the Knowledge-Café is an easy and low cost way to make Knowledge Sharing really work for you and your organisation.

This DVD explains how to run your own Knowledge-Café to obtain these benefits. The DVD consists of two sections, one of which is a conversation explaining how to run a Knowledge-Café and the second section is a series of slides, which may be used to brief your colleagues before a Knowledge-Café.
